David's Tall Order

David James is hopeful that West Ham can win half of their remaining games to stay in the Premiership.

"The plan is to get six wins and West Brom was one of them, so it is a case of half and half with us needing five wins in 10 games," he says.

"We still have Bolton, Sunderland, and Birmingham to play and all we can do is beat the teams we can.

"The confidence gained from West Brom should see us right as long as we don't do what we have before, which is win and then go on and lose."

The Hammers have won back to back only on one occasion this season, and with just two of their last 18 Premiership games having gleaned victories - both in the last four - it is a tall order.

At home, only nine points from a possible 42 so far this season have been taken, with two wins in 16 at Upton Park and seven home league games in 13 lost.

But David advocates the power of positive thinking and insists: "It is important we win against Tottenham. We mustn't be under any illusions about the task because we are still in the bottom zone and the objective is to get out of it as soon as we can, but I believe we can do it."

David is also full of praise for Gary Breen, following the 'stick' he got when entering the fray at The Hawthorns for the first time since the Manchester United FA Cup debacle.

"I believe Gary Breen came in for a bit of it, which you would not have known when he came on - he looked top drawer in the time he was on even if it was only a few minutes," says David.

"That is the form we have to reproduce in the remaining 10 games."

Gary himself adds: "We fully understood what type of game it would be and that we would have to match them first and foremost physically and mentally, then hopefully our quality would come through.

"I don't think there was much quality there on the day but a lot of blood and guts and hopefully we can show that character in the remaining games.

"The fans were brilliant again, they travelled in their numbers and didn't stop cheering - although I didn't get a good reception when I came on - and it was just important to get the three points."

As for Sven Goran Eriksson being in the crowd on Sunday to watch his match-winning performance, David says: "I didn't even think about it."
