Tony Optimistic

Tony Gale believes the fans can help West Ham avoid the drop this season - and have a really good campaign next time around.

"I think the fans have been incredible this year and if they can just keep it going we can stay up this season," he says.

"If we do survive, and I am being honest, it wouldn't surprise me if, next season, we can get up to the seventh spot where we were in the first place.

"If you look at the sides that are up there challenging at the moment, the Evertons and the Southamptons, they haven't really got squads better than ours.

"That is how close this league is and how much of a rut you can get into when you are losing games, and how much of a good run you can get into when you are winning and the confidence is high.

"We have got to build on this season, and another plus if we do stay up is the experience players like Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson and Joe Cole will have gained.

"If you can do it when things are going wrong and you are under pressure imagine how well these lads will hopefully do next season if things are going better."

Former Fulham player Tony welcomed the recent addition of Rufus Brevett to the squad from west London, and he adds: "Rufus is a good player and I am surprised they let him go as he was ahead of Jon Harley and Pierre Wome in the pecking order.

"They were both bought to take his place, he kept them in his slipstream, and I haven't got a clue why Fulham allowed him to leave.

"He is a fit lad, which is the most important thing, and if you look around the leagues for left backs it is very hard to find a good young one so Rufus might do us a good turn.

"I know there are problems at Fulham at the moment and Rufus might have benefited from that by getting a two and a half year contract at West Ham.

"He has taken his opportunity and West Ham have taken their opportunity as well; Fulham are obviously trying to get people off the wage bill.

"He has come on leaps and bounds since he has been under Jean Tigana.

"It is a good bit of business to get a successor for Nigel Winterburn - who I think is in the running for Hammer of the Year with the effort and commitment he has shown to the cause."

As for the fact that Glenn Roeder was unable to bring a centre half to the club, Tony says: "No centre halves came in but Glenn had a look around Europe, had his scouts out, talked to agents, and couldn't find anyone better than what we had.

"It would have been a bit of a waste of money getting someone in even if it was short term.

"Glenn will be hoping for the sort of form Pearce and Repka showed against Blackburn when they did quite well."
