Robbie's Blessing In Disguise

Robbie Stockdale reckons that playing away might have been a blessing in disguise when they went to Nottingham Forest to grab three points on Sunday.

Robbie, whose loan has been extended to a third month, is certainly not being disrespectful to the home supporters, about whom he has said he is extremely impressed.

Rather, he points to the pressure that players can feel if things are not going according to plan.

Ironically, Alan Pardew's first game in charge was against Nottingham Forest at home and the game ended a 1-1 draw, and Robbie says:

"Coming away from home against Forest I think we found it a little bit easier than playing at home as has been the case in the last couple of weeks.

"Obviously the expectations are very high when we play at Upton Park and occasionally we haven't really delivered."

Robbie, who has been given permission to play for West Ham in the cup while on loan, was restored to the starting line up for the Forest game with Hayden Mullins moving back to midfield from right back and Kevin Horlock being rested on the bench before coming on in the second half.

"Going to places like Forest where you get a team who want to play football with you is good," he says, "because we have got the players to outplay any team in this division.

"It was a good win and it could have been more, but overall 2-0 away from home is good.

"The earlier we get the second goal the better but obviously at 1-0 they are always in the game with something to keep going for.

"If we could have got that second goal a little bit earlier with a couple of breakaways we had it would have been a little bit easier for us.

"But even so, I thought David James, Tomas Repka, Ian Pearce, Quinny, and the lads in front of us were magnificent and I can't really remember them having a clear chance on goal."

While Jermain Defoe may have picked up the man of the match champagne at the City ground, many of the post match plaudits were for Tomas Repka's performance, and Robbie was a first hand witness of how well he did.

"Tomas has been playing really well recently; in the last couple of home games he has been standing out for me," he says.

"I thought it was a good, solid, professional effort and we came out with a clean sheet - which we haven't had for a little bit."

But was Robbie disappointed when he was overlooked for the right back spot when Tomas moved from there to replace Christian Dailly at centre half because of the captain's pleurisy?

"I was a little bit; I have come here to try and get my career going again and to play football," admits Robbie.

"For the first little bit of the Forest match I found it a little bit hard to get into the game because it is not easy when you have not been playing.

"But it was okay and in the end, we got a good result so hopefully we can carry on from there."

And the loan extension?

"Obviously Middlesbrough had a say in it as well as the people here and me; I am pleased it has happened," he concludes.
