Hayden's Hope

Hayden Mullins is pleading with referee Scott Mathieson to look again at the sending off of Jermain Defoe on Saturday.

Giving his assessment of the red card, against which West Ham are appealing, he says:

"I think it was just a bit of frustration and the way I saw it he kicked the ground - I don't think he has aimed a kick at anyone in their team and if you ask the player he concerned and he didn't know what it was for either.

"It was an unbelievable red card - when he did go back I thought he was going to talk to their guy because he might have pushed Jermain or whatever, but I never thought he was going to produce a red card in that situation - when he did I was stunned.

"It is puzzling, but it meant we have had to try and get on with things from so early in the game.

"I didn't really see Jermain at half time, I don't think he was in the dressing room because he was a bit upset - and you can't blame him.

"I spoke to him after the match; he said he has asked their guy 'did I kick you?' and he said 'no, I don't know what happened.'

"I think he is getting targeted a bit at the moment and it is not really his fault.

"He has just come back after a five match ban and I think referees are looking out for him a little bit - he did nothing at all to warrant a red card, in my eyes.

"I think if the ref looks at it again he is going to have to rescind it because there is nothing there - but we will have to wait and see."

Hayden still thinks West Ham could have won the game, and he adds:

"I think we could have had more goals, but it wasn't to be; Mattie was terrorising them in the first half, Conners had a couple of good chances and Marlon has had another one.

"Their goal was disappointing on our part especially when we had done so well for most of the game.

"It took us a couple of minutes to regain our composure but we tried to go forward again.

"We didn't have many opportunities and there were a lot of tired lads having played so long with only 10 men.

"We have got a good game now against Ipswich which we are looking forward to and hopefully we can get three points there, then Forest away which is another hard game.

"We are not under any illusions but with the team we have got I think we can take the game to anyone."

As for his moving from the midfield on Saturday, he has no complaints.

"The gaffer spoke to me and said that Christian had gone down with an illness.

"He said he wanted me to play right back with Tomas down the middle but I didn't have a problem with it."

As for the Yuletide celebrations, he says:

"It will be a quiet Christmas with us training but it is a sacrifice worth making."
