Tony's Sadness

Tony Carr says he is sad to see Glenn Roeder leave the club - while admittting that such departures are an inevitable consequence of working in the game.

"It is sad when any manager loses his job but unfortunately we do know it is part and part and parcel of football," he says.

"No one could have worked harder than Glenn to make it a success; he is a very good coach and a diligent manager.

"But he has had a bad year with his illness and then we got relegated, and I feel for him having lost his job.

"He is a very, very nice guy - but unfortunately the business we are in is a mucky one at times."

Tony took the reserves to Southampton on Tuesday, witnessing a 2-1 defeat.

Daryl McMahon scored West Ham's consolation goal with a late penalty.

"They had a lot of experienced players that made a difference and for us it was more or less the U19 squad that had to play, but it was nice to play at St. Marys even though we weren't quite good enough to make more impact than we did," he says.

"But we worked very hard and defended very well but they had probably the better players on the park to make the difference."
