Don Backs Jermain

Don Hutchison is backing Jermain Defoe to have a record-breaking year in a West Ham shirt this season.

He is fully aware that Jermain is hugely disappointed by the club's loss of Premiership status and explains: "Everyone knows each other's feelings because it is a small squad and there is a bit of banter in the changing rooms.

"But he will get 30 or 40 goals for us this season and he could break some records - that's what we are hoping for."

He admits, though, that the responsibility is on his colleagues to provide better service than they did on Saturday and adds: "We are frustrated that we didn't give the front men service, me in particular, and it was hard for them but I think they will score a bundle of goals in this division."

It is, however, a case of a lot of new players getting to know each other, and one of them, Matthew Etherington, says of Saturday's frustrating stalemate: "It was one of those days; it happens, Jermain knows that, and everyone knows that.

"They made it hard for us and it was difficult to break them down - but we will get better days.

"He is a great, great player, and I am sure he will score lots of goals in this division.

"Everyone wants him to stay and I am sure he will. If we keep him and David Connolly fit we should be okay."

And Don agrees: "We have definitely got the armoury to go back up and Glenn is looking for players as well.

"I think team spirit is the most important thing and for some reason we are looking tighter and stronger this year.

"We have lost a bit of quality but I think the players have got to take some credit for the way they battled on Saturday.

"Matt Etherington had a good game; he was one of our better players, and if we can get the front boys the service we will get out this division."

As for the Carling Cup draw at Cardiff City, Don concludes: "It will be a good one for the fans, a good atmosphere, and we want to give the fans something to cheer about if we can."
