David James admits that his Aston Villa counterpart Peter Enckelman was "annoyingly" good on Saturday to deny West Ham all three points.

"The performance was very good in the main but unfortunately Peter Enckelman had a very good game and had he not been so good then I think we would have taken the game a lot earlier and won quite comfortably," he says.

"But he has played well and in the end we have got a point which is better than nothing.

"We needed a win, but looking on the bright side Bolton lost on Saturday so it puts us within three points of them. It is not good but it is not bad and the season is still within our control."

Enckelman has made some high profile errors this season, hence the derisive cheers he was given on occasions - especially when dealing with back passes - by Hammers fans, but he had the last laugh and David admits: "You can only do what you can do and Peter has made some great saves and if he hadn't have been on form we would have won the game and if we hadn't created chances we wouldn't have tested him.

"Credit where credit was due; Pete was annoyingly good on the day.

"Fortunately we are three points behind Bolton and not four; had they got anything out of the Chelsea game it would have been a bad day.

"We are within touching distance and we are confident we can get something at Bolton - a win that is.

"All we can do is play our games and it is well within our grasp to get three points on Saturday."
