Trevor: What A Strange Story

Trevor Brooking says the story about Fredi Kanoute wanting to leave was "strange" - and dismisses the veracity of the claim as the player himself did.

"It was strange with everything going well at the moment, and an unbeaten run with Fredi having had two good halves - and in line, I would have thought, to start at the weekend because he played so well.

"It looks mischievously as if one of the agents has tried to start the ball rolling for a summer discussion.

"It originally came from satellite, didn't it, but I haven't seen any interviews and Fredi has denied it.

"Fredi is focusing on Saturday and hopefully he will get his chance to prove a point and score a goal or two because everyone is focused on keeping the run and that unbeaten tag going."

Trevor hopes home support will swing things in West Ham's favour after two away draws recently and he adds:

"I think the fans can play a big part in Saturday's game, quite frankly - they have been terrific in recent games when we have started to improve.

"It is a massive game, like a cup final, and a win there would certainly bring Villa into it and takes us closer to the likes of Birmingham and Bolton.

"And you have got Fulham who got beaten in the week and have a horrendous run-in; though they are on 38 points I think they are reachable.

"It is a big game for all the players and I think the Fredi issue, although the media latched onto it, will hopefully peter out.

"Let's be honest, if the club was unsuccessful and didn't stay up many players would consider their position but everyone has been focused on staying up - and that is what we are looking forward to as there is a lot of optimism around the club.

"You get one or two stories like that; Paolo's situation hit the headlines two or three weeks ago and it has happened with West Brom and Sunderland who are isolated towards the bottom.

"Any one of the four or five clubs we have mentioned will be in the same boat come the middle of May if they are the third club involved.

"I can't see Leeds with the quality of their side and the 6-1 win being down there but I do think ourselves, Birmingham, Bolton, Aston Villa, and Fulham are the five that are battling it out to make sure they are not the third club.

"Naturally everyone sees the gap of four points at present but I thought it was an excellent point at Southampton and again there was a lot of spirit and determination to make sure they picked something up to keep the unbeaten run going.

"With the results not going that well other than the Spurs beating Birmingham there was suddenly a four point gap, but this week Bolton have got to go to Chelsea, which is a tough game, and what West Ham have to do is get within three points.

"And then with two games over Easter, by the time those games are played I'd like to feel there are four or five clubs within a point of each other, and I think that could well be the scenario - if we keep on picking up points as we have done the pressure grows on those above."

Villa earned a point against Arsenal last week and Trevor adds:

"I saw that game; they played quite well a defensive system with three at the back and four tight markers in midfield with Lee Hendrie behind the front two, and then they went a goal behind and changed to 4-4-2 with a more attacking line-up.

"At Southampton recently they were terrific and got to 2-0 up, but could have had four, before Beattie got one and then they got an equaliser late on in the 89th minute.

"They have struggled to score goals but Vassell, we know, has got a lot of pace - but our form has improved and I think from Villa's point of view they will be looking to make sure they don't get beaten because a draw would keep them six points clear and it would be a job half done.

"It is a big game with the initiative on West Ham to get the three points; against Spurs and Sunderland the goals didn't come early so it is a case of being patient and not getting nervous.

"The longer the game goes on the more anxious people get but it is a case of keeping the movement and the confidence that is in the side sustained.

"Aston Villa will be looking on this game as one to try and get at least a point from and that can't be underestimated."

Michael Carrick is hoping to pass a late fitness test but Trevor says:

"Michael's injury is still not totally resolved and there is Easter to come with two games so it is a difficult one because his passing has added a dimension.

"We will have to wait and see, but that is the idea of having a squad, and when one is missing you have to make sure whoever comes in capitalises on it."
