Jermain: We Will Do It

Jermain Defoe remains steadfast in his belief that West Ham will climb out of the bottom three before the end of the season, despite going further adrift at the weekend.

"I am all right, I am not worried at all," he says. "I still think we can get out of it and I think all the players feel that as well.

"I don't feel we have got anything to worry about."

He says the other results don't concern him, adding: "We just have to look at ourselves and hopefully those other teams will slip up. I think we can get a result against Aston Villa at home and I think we are good enough to get out of it with the players we have got."

But he does admit that an improvement will be needed and he explains: "I don't think we played particularly well but at the end of the day we got the result; it was quite warm out there but it is difficult to say why we didn't play to our full potential.

"When you don't start well it is difficult to pick yourself up but the main thing is the result, we have got a point, and we can't really complain.

"But next week we have to start well as we did against Tottenham and Sunderland. I was away with the under-21s for quite a long time but we worked hard in training when we came back."

Of his all-important goal, he adds: "Was it a throw-in? I thought Johnno was going to get it on Pearcey's head and I just gambled, thinking if he misses this then I am in.

"I don't think the defender expected it to go over Pearcey's head but as soon as it dropped I just tried to hit the target.

"I was so close to the keeper all I needed to do was just touch it, and it was good to see it go in."

He does admit that he had to check the linesman's flag had stayed down, though, and adds: "You have to because a lot of the time you celebrate and then you realise you were offside."

Jermain is happy that Michael Carrick will be back on Saturday after failing a late fitness test at the weekend with a groin strain.

"Michael will be back and he brings a lot to the team. I think we missed him on Saturday because he keeps the ball for you," he says.

"He is such a great player and him and Joe have been working so hard in the middle."

Jermain also says he is delighted that Wayne Rooney got the plaudits for his full England debut last week and adds: "He is a great player, and I am just happy for him really. People say that I am in competition with him but I don't think about it, to be honest.

"All I need to do is just look at myself and focus on West Ham. Wayne Rooney does what he does and I do what I do."
