Steve: We Must Start Scoring

Steve Lomas says the next step towards climbing the table is converting some of the many chances that are being created.

He is naturally pleased that the Hammers kept their first clean sheet of the season, but admits that is only half the battle and insists: "We just needed to score in the first half on Saturday because we had good chances.

"We have to take our opportunities when they come; we can't keep having chances and missing them.

"The effort is there for everybody to see; we just need to get our first win, hopefully at Chelsea.

"The clean sheet is the positive I suppose; David made a great save from Anelka at the end and that is not to be underestimated.

"But when we do have chances we do have to take the pressure off defenders and score them.

"The game was a bit flat in the second half on the whole so it is disappointing again.

"They had a lot of bodies in midfield so it was difficult - and if you had told them it would be 0-0 before the game, they would have been delighted about that."

But Steve has no qualms about his former side playing that way to force West Ham's first 0-0 draw in 40 games, and he admits: "It is about what their manager thinks to get the most points for his team."

And he warns that City won't be the last to adopt such tactics this season at Upton Park.

"It is just the way it is," he says, "and we know teams are going to be a bit wary of us with our home record last season, so they are coming to defend."

And Steve's conclusion as he looks at the league table to see West Ham adrift now of Sunderland in second bottom?

"I am disappointed for Glenn because obviously we want to be in a better position, but hopefully we can go to Chelsea and get something."
