Glenn Roeder says he might well have been interested in bringing Marc-Vivien Foe back to Upton Park had Manchester City not swooped silently for his signature.

Marc-Vivien was, of course, a record signing for West Ham in Harry Redknapp's reign, and Glenn, who worked with him on the training ground, says: "I really liked Marc-Vivien Foe as a man; I thought he was a wonderful human being - to be honest, he was a delight to be around and I think a lot of him.

"He is a big strong man with good principles who trained hard and, funnily enough, I thought the last couple of months were his best, and that he was really coming to grips with the Premiership.

"When I saw Kevin had made him a loan signing I thought it was an excellent move on Manchester City's part.

"We were never given the option; the deal was done before we knew he was available.

"We never dreamt that Marc-Vivien Foe would be available on loan from Lyons, a club that plays in the Champions' League.

"It was quite a surprise and before we realised that he was available the deal had been done with Manchester City."
