Transfer Coup In January?

Glenn Roeder hopes to pull off what he describes as a "coup" in the transfer market in January - if he can get his man.

Although Glenn can't sign any players - except ones that are currently unemployed - to play before the end of the calendar year, he is already active in looking to strengthen his squad when the time comes.

He reveals: "We have already got our eye on one for the January window and if we can get this particular target that month I think it would be a brilliant signing, a little bit of a coup for us.

"But it is at a very early stage whether we would be able to bring in this player to the club in January."

Glenn says he should know more by the end of the month, and adds: "We are working on it now and we hope to have confirmation in the next couple of weeks that this particular player will arrive with us on January 1st ready to play for the rest of the season."

However, he admits that the deal, if it is done, will only be a loan one, though he is none the less excited for that.

"We will only be allowed to take him on loan as he is considered a very valuable and exciting talent at his club now and we wouldn't be able to afford buying him.

"I don't really want to say any more yet because we are only at the stage of preliminary talks and are being led by agents that are telling us that they can bring the player to the club.

"We have already indicated that we are happy to do it and we would be delighted to bring him in - and if we do, it would prove to be a quite a catch for us."

Glenn also reveals that he had two targets that he was working on right up to the transfer deadline on the day of West Ham's last league game.

"We did try for a couple of players but we would only have been able to secure one, and Saturday came and went," he says.

"We were reasonably close, but I never ever felt in the last 24 hours that we would be able to make the breakthrough that we wanted to."
