Christian: Graft Is The Key

Christian Dailly said a conscious decision to dispense with pretty stuff earned the Hammers victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

"I am happy because we battled so hard, and that is what we have to do every game now - just as we did against Arsenal, and just as we did against Chelsea," he says.

"We are getting sick of being pretty and losing games. We had a long talk about that amongst ourselves as players and we said 'sod pretty'.

"We are a fit side, and we can handle a battle. We knew that game would be one, and they couldn't out-battle us.

"That is a massive plus we can take from the game and there was no time, apart perhaps from a couple of minutes after the break, when we were under real pressure.

"That was due to the fact that we cleared our lines, got up the park, and they couldn't keep us under any sustained pressure - and we always looked like we might nick another one."

Despite one Sunday newspaper naming Christian as a centre half and Ian Pearce as a right back - a system which Glenn Roeder could have employed - it was in fact the other way round, with Christian at full back.

But he has no problems with that, and says: "I will play right back, I'll play anywhere; it is one of those things, and the manager is quite happy to put me anywhere.

"I played in the middle of midfield for Scotland in midweek, centre half last week, and right back at the weekend.

"I enjoyed it, and I was able to adjust, no problem."

Unlike Gary Breen, who can also play at right back, Christian was involved in victories with his country midweek, and he adds: "I've had three wins in a week, which has been great for me."
