Paul: Paying The Penalty

Paul Goddard says West Ham should have had TWO penalties against Birmingham City at Upton Park last week.

On top of the incident with Darren Purse clutching his face when he had touched Steve Lomas' shot inside the box, Paul points to the fact that Joe Cole was caught in the second half - but chose to stay on his feet.

"You can look at that and you can well say that Joe Cole was definitely tripped when he had a little wriggle. I am sure if he had gone down and been a little bit less honest he would have got a penalty there," he says.

"Credit to Joe, though, it shows you the nature of the British game. I don't think we like players who try and con referees by diving when they get tackled.

"That is where we are miles in front of the foreign leagues but of course at times you wish players would be semi-professional and take a little tumble.

"He certainly got touched but that is by the by and we are not making excuses for a second half performance that was not up to standard."

As for the other incident, he says: "Darren Purse definitely handled the ball and the tried to con the referee by holding his face - we all saw that on the replay.

"But these things happen and you don't get them - when you are at the bottom things like that go against you most weeks."

Meanwhile, discussing the recent release of 20-year-old striker Louis Riddle at a time when fit forwards are a little thin on the ground Paul explains: "It is not easy to break through. Louis had a horrendous injury a few years back and he fought his way back to fitness.

"Unfortunately he fell a little bit behind our benchmark and he needs to play football at this stage of his career.

"We were struggling to offer him that in the reserves so the chance to go to Stevenage suits everybody."
