Tony's Loss

Tony Gale admits that he has no idea where the championship medal that West Ham 'helped' him win in 1994/95 is.

After being freed from his West Ham United contract by Capital Radio colleague Billy Bonds the season before, Tony was still without a professional club just prior to the next campaign, but he joined Blackburn as they won the title - with a little help on the last day of the season when West Ham drew 1-1 at home to Manchester United while Blackburn were getting beaten against Liverpool.

"Ludek Miklosko had that heroic game against them but I don't even know where the medals are, to be honest, and I can't remember when I last got them out - I'd have to have a sort out," says Tony.

"It was a great day, and I said to our boys that they wouldn't need to win because West Ham would take care of Manchester United at Upton Park, but it was a bit hairy and Ludo had a blinder.

"I can also remember Kenny Brown's goal all those years ago to beat them 1-0 when they were going for their first title for a long time, and Leeds United ended up winning it that year."

But all of that, says Tony, is history, and of the present he says: "How do we stop them? We don't worry about stopping them, we go at them - I think that is the best way to look at it.

"If you look at the fact that Michael Carrick and Steve Lomas are back in contention it means we can switch Trevor to the flank, and the best policy is to go forward.

"There have been a couple of encouraging results at Old Trafford recently and they will also be aware that we have stopped them winning the league a couple of times.

"Everybody loves seeing Manchester United because of their glamour and the way they play. They always give you a chance because they are going forward all the time.

"It is a great occasion whenever they come to London, and West Ham in particular, and I think a game with two attacking sides is unlikely to give us a match like the Everton one.

"We've had a couple recently where the boys have had to grind out results, but you have to be fair and say six points is a great return from them, and that should more or less see us safe, so we can go into this game with an attitude of 'well, let's go for it.'"
