Glenn Roeder admits the spotlight will be on Paolo Di Canio when West Ham entertain Manchester United at Upton Park this weekend.

He knows the matter of the transfer saga concerning Manchester United's interest in him will be the centre of attention once more, and says: "The focus will be on him simply because there was a lot of speculation about him going to Manchester United.

"I think what is key in this issue all along is that Paolo was very keen to stress that he hadn't asked for a transfer, and he hadn't - that is actual fact.

"He never asked to go, and we turned down Manchester United's first and only official offer. Thankfully, it never materialised, it went away, and we are all delighted Paolo is still with us."

He acknowledges that enquiries, and even bids, for players are made all the time without necessarily becoming public knowledge, but explains: "It is two-fold. It was one of the biggest clubs in the world that came calling, and obviously it is a very high profile player - and when you have got those two ingredients it is always going to be big news."

The Hammers go into the game following a home win which, for the second time this season, was followed by defeated opponents sacking their manager.

It first happened when West Ham beat Southampton, and this week, of course, Walter Smith's contract at Everton was terminated.

Glenn admits to feeling sympathy for the latest managerial casualty, and adds: "Of course, the same as for Stuart Gray after we beat Southampton - it was very sad to see Walter Smith and Archie Knox leave Everton.

"I know them both personally, they are two great guys and I know they will surface again if they choose to carry on in the game, and I don't see why Walter and Archie won't continue in football.

"I'm sure they will be given another opportunity to carry on at a club as big as Everton in their chosen profession as manager and coach."

Meanwhile, reports that Michael Carrick is ahead of Steve Lomas in the race to be fit for Saturday are not strictly accurate, and Glenn says: "Michael Carrick, Steve Lomas, and John Moncur have trained all week, they have been in every day and we will assess the situation on Friday morning, but I am hoping all three will be available for selection."
