Paul's Promise

Paul Goddard says that the aim for the new campaign is retaining last season's home form - while sorting out the away day blues.

With just three away wins in the Premiership last season, and a couple of heavy consecutive defeats early on to boot, Paul sees the way forward quite clearly.

"The away form is something I am very confident we can improve on," he says, "and obviously we had exceptional home form which we would like to get near again, because that is playing in front of your own fans.

"We must improve on our away form, that is for sure, and we feel confident we were turning the corner on that score in the last part of the season.

"But obviously Sky TV don't think that way because they have chosen our first two away games, so they obviously feel that there will be goals.

"It was a pleasure to go to Upton Park, the atmosphere was always fantastic, and it was great to have that party atmosphere on the last day against Bolton."

Paul insists the players will not be resting on their laurels after last season and adds: "The players all enjoyed it, and we did, but we have done that, savoured it, and put it on the back burner - because we know the hard work is starting again."

There are still moves afoot to bring in new recruits, and Paul says: "The squad is obviously not as strong as we would like but to see Ian Pearce running around pre-season and looking trim is a massive benefit.

"Glenn has got irons in the fire in a number of places and hopefully we will add a couple more players - and I hope we will start to feel really good about ourselves."

Paul also says that the cup form can be improved upon, and reflects: "It was a disappointment to go out to Reading in the Worthington Cup, and the way it happened on penalties, as well.

"The FA Cup run was good but lady luck just wasn't on our side in the end.

"The cups are winnable. We have to be frank and honest and say there are very few teams that can win the league now, or even finish in the top six.

"We could just have the capability to do that, but to win it would be a little bit unrealistic. To win a cup, though, is realistic as we can beat anyone on our day."

Meanwhile, Paul was pleased to see teenage summer signing Youssef Sofiane enjoy his first taste of friendly action at Norwich on Tuesday night, but urges fans not to expect too much, too soon from him.

"We need to give him a chance to bed in to English football," he insists.
