Rai: Youth Is Good

Raimond van der Gouw thinks that West Ham's policy of bringing through players through your youth ranks is a good one - and that his former club Manchester United haven't done too badly following that route either!

"West Ham do have a lot of good players in the first team that have come through the ranks and I think it is good," says Raimond, who misses the trip to his old club with an ankle injury that could see him out for three weeks.

"Recently, Manchester United have done that as well, as you could see in their team that faced Deportivo.

"I think that is okay as long as there is a balance with experienced players."

Raimond expects the Hammers to rise off the bottom of the table soon and says: "We are not getting points from the clubs we should be getting them from, and if you lose against top teams it is not unexpected.

"If you look at our team there is a lot of quality and potential in it but the only thing is we haven't shown it yet except in a couple of games.

"Hopefully that will change as soon as possible and the good thing about football is you never know how it will go - you always have a chance.

"I am disappointed with our results but I still have to believe we can turn it around and hopefully it will come very quick."

Raimond is understandably disappointed by his absence at the weekend, and says: "I would have liked to have been involved; I still have contact with lots of people in Manchester."

Raimond doesn't know if West Ham can repeat the victory of last season in the league at Old Trafford and says: "I think it will be a very different game; at the moment Manchester United are flying and are getting good results against good teams, so it will be very hard.

"But if everyone plays 200% we have a chance of a good result, even if that is not a win."

Raimond never wrote off his former club's chances of the title as so many did earlier in the campaign, and he adds: "I never believed that because I knew they usually have a good month in December.

"You look at the table and you will find that Manchester United are usually in the top three then."

The game at Old Trafford could see Joe Cole relinquishing the captaincy as Steve Lomas has returned to the squad, and Raimond says: "He is very proud to be the captain - but he is not telling me what to do because I am not playing!"
