Michael: Boys Are Buzzing

Michael Carrick says the players go to Old Trafford on Saturday 'buzzing, enthusiastic, and fully confident we can turn things round.'

Such an assessment from a player at the bottom of the Premiership is not borne of misguided optimism, the arrogance of youth, or simply as a result of bland rhetoric - rather it is a genuine portrayal of the feelings of the players in the spotlight.

"There is still time, and it can't be too long before we start picking up points; we are being very positive in the camp at the moment in the knowledge we will move up quite quickly if we keep playing as we did against Middlesbrough."

But are the players worried about the statistic, lurking just around the corner, that the team at the bottom of the pile at Christmas since the inception of the Premiership, has always gone down?

"Not at all," he stresses, "a lot of people are saying that the lads are getting down but we have been buzzing, enthusiastic, and fully confident we can turn things around."

As for his own form, under intense scrutiny earlier in the season, he says:

"I have been happy for a few weeks now, and I have come back to something like my best, which is something I am delighted with.

"Hopefully I can keep improving; everyone has a little spell but you just have to play through them; thankfully it is behind me now and I am playing good football."

He admits to mixed feelings following the 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, and explains:

"It is disappointing again but we are moving in the right direction; obviously the lads are gutted because we didn't pick up three points - but with performances like that we are not going to be in the bottom three very long.

"We are still confident and it showed, especially in the first half when I thought we were outstanding, and if we keep playing like that we will get out of it, no problem.

"I was disappointed straight away because we need the points, but when you sit back and look at the performance you have to say we will be okay if we perform in such a way - so you have to take the positives out of it.

"Glenn said 'well done' and you can't ask much more - it's just the way it is going for us at the moment.

"We are staying strong, we have got good self-belief, and we are sticking together - which counts for a lot.

"We maybe let ourselves down a bit in the final third, but we dug in, and if you take the game as a whole I think we were on top for most of it, which is something we can take to the next game."

As for Ian Pearce up front, he says:

"It is nice for Ian to score because I think he was disappointed with the one he missed against Southampton."

And Joe as captain?

"He was quieter than usual! It is a great achievement and I am very pleased for him.

"To be captain of any Premiership club is a big honour, especially being so young.

"There are 11 captains out there and everyone does their bit, it is just who wears the armband.

"But he did a good job on Saturday and came up with the goal which is nice for him."

The key now, says Michael, is to turn possession into goals, and he adds:

"It has been so frustrating to play so well recently, even in the Villa game, but scoring is the be-all and end-all, so it was nice for them to go in at Middlesbrough."
