Thanks, Moncs

John Moncur has been given fulsome praise by Glenn Roeder for making himself available as substitute against Southampton on Monday - despite not being fully fit.

Moncs pretty much hauled himself off the treatment table to sit on the bench for the game, and was rewarded with a substitute appearance late in the second half when he replaced Paolo Di Canio.

"I asked him as late as Monday morning, after he had just come back into football training for the first time on Saturday, if he would come onto the bench, and if you come onto the bench you expect to come on at any time as soon as the game starts.

"He was the only midfield player that we had available to put there but, typical John Moncur, because he wants to be part of turning the situation round, when I asked him if he could do it he said 'no problem at all, I'm right there, you can count on me.'

"And that is just the attitude that we want from everybody."

Glenn sees John as being one of the 'old school' and adds: "He comes from an era where people would often play with a little injury or when they were not fully fit.

"It is amazing how often, when you press yourself into action, how you get through the game and that little problem you think is going to become a big one, doesn't materialise.

"That is how John is as a person. It is the era that he has grown up in, and it is the era that he has played in.

"There is no doubt that, generally speaking, players now don't put themselves forward unless they are 100% fit."

Glenn says there was never any contact with Gillingham about Moncs, despite reported comments by their boss Andy Hessenthaler that said he would look to sign him on loan.

"That was a huge surprise to me - a total shock - and it is a mystery story. I don't know where it has come from," he admits.

"With the lack of numbers we have got, nobody from the first team squad will be allowed to leave the club at the moment."
