Moncs: Gills Move Never On

John Moncur says he never had any intention of considering a move to Gillingham - and is determined to play his part in helping West Ham up the table.

Newspaper reports have claimed that Moncs was set to move to the Gills on loan, but he says: "They did get into contact with me a while back but I don't want to go anywhere else, to be honest.

"I have got until the end of my contract, July, and I want to stay at West Ham like I have always said, and, to be honest, I think they need everyone to pull together whether you are in the squad, in the frame, playing or not.

"We all have to give 100% and I want to be part of that."

Moncs got the call up to the bench for the game against Southampton and replaced the injured Paolo Di Canio in the second half, and he says: "To be fair, it came as a bit of a shock. I wasn't originally involved because I have been out for a long time but Don and Fredi had been out injured, and Richard Garcia as well.

"The gaffer called me in and said 'it isn't ideal but will you be sub?'

"I didn't have to be asked again, but I can still feel the knee injury and I had broken my rib as well. The knee has been a problem for the last month, but hopefully now I am getting over it.

"There was a bit of discomfort but when you go out there you just forget everything, and, although it ended up disappointing the way the result went it was good to get back in the frame."

He could quite easily have given a polite refusal, but he insists: "That is the easy option - and I probably would have done in another situation, but the way the it is at the moment there is no way I am not going to try my best to get us out of the predicament we are in.

"I think we are good enough, but going back if we were sitting comfortable in mid-table I probably would have looked after myself a bit more and I then wouldn't be feeling the injury as much as I am at the moment."

John, a veteran of many a relegation battle, says that the club can recover from the current predicament, and says: "To be honest, I wouldn't say the club is in tatters really, and if you look at the way the lads played, we shouldn't have lost that game on Monday, no matter what view you have got of football.

"There was only one team that should have won, and, worst ways, we should have come out with a draw.

"The gaffer is doing a brilliant job the way he is keeping it all going. Everyone is still up for it and it is just a matter of time.

"The results should start falling for us, but the home games have been the thing and we can't put a finger on why we can't win."

John is not bothered by the statistic that the team at the bottom at Christmas, since the inception of the Premiership, has always gone down, and he says: "We have heard all them before but we have got to blank all that. There haven't been too many bad performances at home, two or three probably but look at the Arsenal game or the other night - we should be winning those, the way we have played.

"I think we haven't got the rub of the green with us and at the moment we have got to carry on working and it will change.

"We have still got three or four out injured so we need everyone to rally. Every player is going to give it their all - and I am no exception.

"People know what I am all about, and if I get a chance I want to try and do my best because I am 36.

"It hasn't been ideal for me the way it has gone. I haven't been playing regularly for two or three years, so it is a battle to try to get match fit.

"Nothing is like the first team, but if I am called on I will try my best and I think everyone has got to adopt that attitude."

That attitude, according to Moncs, is typified by Tomas Repka, and he adds: "He did brilliant the other night and all the defenders did really well. Christian, I thought played well, and they are good players as they proved last year.

"We have so many quality players in the squad - look at the England players we have got - I just think if we get a bit of confidence, a couple of results at home especially, then you get that hoodoo that is bothering us at the moment out the way, and we might go on a good run."

As for the trip to the Boro, he says: "They are playing well, to be fair to them, but when you have your backs to the wall and you give your best, anything can happen.

"If we go there with the right attitude we can get a result. We have to work hard and things will turn for you and, to be fair, the manager stresses that all the time.

"Apart from what he does tactically he has stressed that the work ethic has got to be right - and to be honest with you the lads have been showing that.

"We just need a little bit of luck."
