Paolo Back Soon

Paolo Di Canio should be back in pre-season action against Reading at the Madejski stadium on Monday night.

Glenn is delighted at the return of Paolo, who has just been involved in one pre-season game thus far, to the fray and says: "Paolo has trained hard this week and done an awful lot of fitness work.

"He joined in the football yesterday and to all intents and purposes he is back. With a couple more days of football hopefully he will be available at Reading on Monday night."

Steve Lomas is not certain to make the big kick off, and Glenn adds: "Steve Lomas has pain in his shin just below the knee, and it is a bit of a concern at the moment because it is a mystery injury.

"I am hoping it will clear up by the middle of next week and that he can play against Vitesse Arnhem and then be okay for the Newcastle game - but we can't be sure at the moment.

"I am seeing that one or two clubs are picking up injuries but we can't afford to do that. That is how it has got to be - when you have got such a small squad you can not afford to have injuries and that is why we take so much care to try and avoid them.

"Once we get past 31st August, there are no loans or transfers and you have to get on with what you have got at the football club."

Glenn is happy with the centre half situation at the club because of the emergence of Glen Johnson - recently in action for England U19s - and Anton Ferdinand, as well as the addition of Gary Breen to the squad this week.

Glenn, who has sold three centre halves this summer, says: "We moved on Rigobert Song who was very successful in France before he went to back Liverpool. He is now at Lens and we obviously wish him well as we do Hayden Foxe, who has gone back to Harry at Portsmouth - I think Hayden will find that level more acceptable.

"We have let Raggy go back to Norway and of course we have brought in Gary Breen who we expect to be pushing for a first team place.

"And the two youngsters are making progress as well."

Meanwhile looking to Friday evening's friendly at Dagenham, Glenn adds: "I thought Dagenham were unlucky not to have been promoted this year and probably they should have been.

"It must have been heartbreaking for them to miss out on goal difference, but I think this year they will win the Conference because history tells you that the team that misses out normally achieves their goal the next year."

Glenn takes a big squad to the game, but it is more likely to heavily feature payers who have been on the bench of late.

Shaun Byrne is in the squad for the first time this summer after recovering from injury, while Grant McCann is absent as he is playing a friendly for Grimsby before returning to the Hammers.

Trialist Brent Rahim, a Trinidad and Tobago international who spent a short time training with the club last season, is also included in the squad.

Squad: James, Van der Gouw, Sinclair, Schemmel, Repka, Dailly, Labant, Garcia, Cole, Carrick, Kanoute, Forde, D McMahon, Lumsden, Johnson, Sofiane, Moncur, Pearce, Minto, Defoe, Camara, Courtois, Iriekpen, Byrne, Rahim, Allen, Ward, Eastwood, Khan, Allen.
