Glen's Aim

Young defender Glen Johnson says he hopes to force his way onto the bench for the last game of the season, against Bolton on May 11.

The 17-year-old has been included in recent first team squads, although has yet to get a substitute's spot.

But he insists: "I am pleased with the way things are going and I obviously want to try and get on the bench for the last game against Bolton - we haven't got anything to lose, but you never know."

Although thought of by many as a central defender, he says: "I played right back last night again for the reserves and, to be fair, I have been playing there for most of the season.

"I don't mind. At right back you get more of the ball and I obviously like being on the ball. I always knew that I could play both, the coaches know that I am comfortable in either position, and when I see the team sheet I don't mind where I am put."

With Sebastien Schemmel out injured, Ian Pearce - also a centre half cum right back is there to deputise. In addition there is Steve Potts, who has been on the bench in the last three games.

And, with close to £500,000 a placing, not to mention a little local rivalry with Spurs, there is still an overriding need for three points rather than experimentation against Bolton on the last day.

It could have been different if the Hammers had picked something up in the last two away games, and Glen adds: "I think we should beat Bolton, and then we have to hope Spurs slip up, but at Newcastle, we threw it away when we could have been 4-0 up in the first half - and if the goal had been given at Arsenal it would have been a different game.

"But we have only won 13 points away from home, which is not good - if we could sort that out we would be a top five side."

Even if Glen does not get a run out on the last day of the season, he is at least enjoying the experience of being around the first teamers in training and, more recently, on a match day.

"I look up to all the first team players, and now they are getting used to me being around," he says.

His England under-19 career is ticking over nicely as well, and he adds: "We have just qualified for the championships in early July and if we win just one game then we will qualify for the World Cup."

As for the reserves, he thinks there are one or two who played on Monday evening that will be knocking on the first team door next season, and he says: "We had a young side at Southampton and were against some fairly experienced players, but we have been a young side for most of this season.

"There are loads of good youngsters who are doing well in the team at the moment."

If he does go head to head with Sebastien Schemmel for a right back berth next season, he knows he will have a fight on his hands, and he says: "He has been good this season - and he can run all day."

Of more immediate concern to Glen, however, is to get some stitches removed from a head wound on Wednesday, and he says: "Lately I have been in the wars. I broke my finger, I cut my head open, and there were a few tackles going at me last night as well!"

All of which, of course, is good character building stuff for the teenager...
