Sinclair A Cert?

Tony Gale believes that David Beckham's foot injury could lead to Trevor Sinclair being put under the World Cup spotlight.

"It is horrible to talk about it just after David got injured," he admits, "but it obviously opens the way for other people.

"Trevor's inclusion in the squad, I thought, was imminent, because he would have been cover for David Beckham on the right and Kieron Dyer on the left - if he is fit.

"I think it makes it even better news for Trevor but I obviously feel sorry for David. I think Trevor was probably in the squad anyway because he is at home on the left as he was on the right before.

"Initially he didn't want to play on the left but by doing so he has done himself a lot of favours.

"Now he has proved he can do both sides Sven can be confident of using him, and with Dyer, you don't know if he is going to be fit in any case - but this injury to David fairly cements his place."

Tony points to his consistency in a West Ham shirt rather than the last friendly in Italy, in which he was one of only two players to get more than 45 minutes, as a form guide and explains: "I don't think he had the best of games and I think he would have been the first to admit that. He didn't really go past the full back, Panucci.

"But I think what Sven was saying was exactly correct - it is not what they did in that game, it is what they have been doing throughout the season, and consistently throughout this season Trevor has been a very good player."

Tony is impressed with the way Trevor has stuck to his task since initially asking for a transfer earlier in the campaign - a request since withdrawn.

"He is saying he wants European football, but it's a funny one; the only club that he was linked with was Newcastle," says Tony.

"But if he is going to make a sideways move to a club that is not automatically in Europe next season then I don't think it will be on the cards.

"Glenn wants to keep him, obviously, because he is one of our better players, and though his age is going up every day, quality players are at a premium - and when they become available then most clubs are after them.

"I was at a Fulham function last night and we were talking about how desperate they are for wide players, and they would be one of the clubs that I think would be interested in Trevor as well, but it wouldn't be a move upwards, would it?

"He has just got to keep getting on with it, keep doing the business, and to be fair to him, since he had all that transfer speculation at the beginning of the season he has really knuckled down.

"He has proved himself to be a really good pro and done his best for every game - and had a really good season."

As for the prospects of Joe Cole and Michael Carrick, Tony adds: "I think they should both be on the plane, myself, though I am not sure whether both or either of them will be - they are our future.

"But I think they will stand a better chance for the next World Cup in Germany when conditions will favour us, the young squad will be more experienced and the experience of this World Cup will do those two, in particular, the world of good.

"But not only that - I think they are the better players."
