Glenn Explains

Glenn Roeder has given his reasoning behind his decision to substitute Paolo Di Canio on Saturday.

He insists there was nothing sinister in the move, explaining:

"I think in the last five minutes he was on he was just beginning to tire a bit.

"The young fellow Jermain Defoe had fresh legs, and the game has stretched by then with both defences not pushing up quite as they were in the first 70 or 75 minutes of the game.

"I thought it was an opportunity maybe to put Jermain on and see if we could go for a win.

"It was very late in the game when I took him off, Kanoute had come off and I am hardly going to take Todorov off to put Jermain on."

It was a move which nearly paid off and Glenn adds: "To be fair to Jermain, he had three or four shots in the short time he was on, and probably could have got the winner for us when he drove the ball past the near post with his left foot.

"He is always disappointed when he doesn't score, even if he is only on the pitch for a minute; he is that type of character."

And Glenn reveals that he did talk to Paolo after the game.

"I just said to him afterwards how pleased I was with his time on the pitch," says the Hammers boss.

"It was just a case of a fresh pair of legs and it is certainly no reflection whatsoever on the way he played for us."
