Bassila: We Might Meet Again

Christian Bassila says he is sure he won't be at Upton Park next season - but doesn't rule out returning one day.

"It's been a bad season for me, and I hope the next one will be better and I think that it can," he says. "But that's football; sometimes you have a good year, and sometimes you have a bad one."

But not, he admits, in east London. "I don't think so, I'll go back to France, maybe for a new team or maybe I'll stay with Rennes.

"I will speak to Harry this week and see what he wants but I don't think I will stay.

"It's hard for Harry to judge me but I don't see what I can do - maybe next season with a new team I will show him what I can do with a new team.

"So it's not finished; I'm only 23 and maybe I will come back later. But it was a good experience for me at a good club, and I have learnt a lot from a lot of good players like Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, Trevor Sinclair and Joe Cole."

Christian has played less than 90 minutes football for the Hammers in a season punctuated by a persistent knee injury and the death of both parents.

His combative style, as seen briefly on his debut against Manchester United in August, might just have complemented the skills of the players he
mentions.

As it is, three sub appearances in the Premiership this season have proven, naturally, inconclusive. What is more the fee that Rennes want for him could also be a stumbling block.

But Christian is hoping he does not have to return to his old club - and reveals that he has encountered problems of racism in the town.

"I spoke with the trainer and he wants me to stay, but when I came to West Ham it was because I had a lot of problems with supporters at Rennes - it was not very good for me. I preferred to change atmosphere and that is why I came here.

"I think they want a lot of money for me as they paid a lot from Lyon - I was in the national team at the time - but with the new transfer rules, who knows?"

Of the win which will prove to be his swansong at West Ham, he says: "It was a good second half and we tried to play, and I'm very happy for the forwards, for the confidence, and they can play the last game with an easy mind now.

"I'm very happy for West Ham because winning the game was so important. I was not very confident because I have not played a lot recently and it was my first game this year; that's why I gave the ball to my friend Schemmel when I could have had a shot myself.

"I'm happy that we won for myself as well and I certainly feel better now I have made my comeback."

Christian reckons that the Hammers could do worse than sign Lauren Robert - a top target for Harry - from PSG.

"Robert is a good player who could bring a lot to West Ham; it would be a good choice for West Ham - and him."
