Reserves: No Risks

Roger Cross says that because of the Hammers' injury problems only one senior player was risked in the 3-1 defeat at Highfield Road on Wednesday night.

And, having watched Southampton at Newcastle the night before, he warns that the Saints will be no pushover.

"All games are tricky at the moment, and they are not a bad side at all, and with players that can score goals even though they have had problems in that regard recently.

"We don't want to concede, we want to keep it tight at the back, but I'd like to think we can win the game which is very very important because we don't want to end up relying on others.

"If we can pick up from the second half at Manchester City where we created more chances than for a long time - though we should have converted some of them.

"Harry didn't want to risk any of the first team players tonight because we are pushing hard to get players fit for Saturday with 18 games since we've had Lomas and Sinclair, and now Frank Lampard and John Moncur are added to that; Fredi has been injured, we've lost Ian Pearce and Nigel Winterburn."

That means that fringe players such as Davor Suker are on standby for the game - and it meant that several youngsters got more reserve experience and Dean Smith made his debut for the team.

"But it was a good workout for the young lads and an experience to play at Highfield Road, and we created three very good chances to score in the first half.

"We scored with a good goal early on in the second half  when Stevland Angus headed a free kick from Louis Riddle in to make it 2-1 down.

"It looked as if we had a chance but then we conceded a free kick which we felt was a good tackle from Craig Etherington, and while a few players were arguing with the referee they took the free kick and scored - that showed a lack of experience.

"We gave away three bad goals but the plus point was that we passed the ball quite well and they kept working at it - they never laid down but there wasn't enough in the side."

Scott Minto successfully appealed against a recent reserve sending off - the referee Michael Cairns admitted wrongful dismissal after viewing the video - which is why he was able to play.

Michael Ferrante did not appeal [for obvious reasons if you've seen the video!] and his ban extends to the first game of next season.

But whether Scott gets a run out, as he hopes, on the final day of the season at Middlesbrough, remains to be seen; Roger says:

"He did quite well but he's been out a long time and there's a big difference fitness wise between the reserves and the first team - but who knows with the amount of injuries we've got?"
