Riza Optimistic

Omer Riza is hoping his recent recall from a proposed move to St. Mirren is proof that Glenn Roeder is thinking of giving him a chance in the first team squad soon.

Omer is encouraged by the comments made by Glenn about him and is hoping to force his way into the limelight, knowing that with three away trips in a week coming up now is as good a time as any.

"I'm playing really well at the moment," he says.

And, explaining why a proposed move to St. Mirren fell through, he adds:

"Everything was set to go but the gaffer pulled me back and said I've done really well, and that he didn't want to let me go at the moment.

"It wasn't really a disappointment because when you hear that off your manager you are delighted.

"But it's whether it leads to anything - I wouldn't want to be pulled back and then not get a chance.

"I'm not going to sit in the reserves all season.

"He said that some forwards are injured right now though since I have been back I haven't really had a look in, even though I have been playing really well."

He knows all too well there is real competition up front and adds:

"There will always be the two definites there in Kanoute and Di Canio, but there is also Todorov, Defoe, and Kitson.

"But I feel a different player since I came back from loan - stronger, creating a lot, and doing well overall.

"I thought my chances were limited at West Ham so I was prepared to go up to Scotland to prove to everyone else that I can play and will get to the top.

"If you do well you should get a chance and the coaches say I have been doing well.

"I have been getting good vibes but whether anything comes from it we will wait and see.

"If things progress here I will be delighted because I don't want to leave the club.

"I'll give it until Christmas."

Last season saw him loaned out for experience, and he recalls:

"I played 11 games at Barnet and scored five goals, then I went to Cambridge and played at right wing back, where I scored three in eleven.

"I wasn't too happy about playing there but he didn't have any right wingers.

"I made a couple of errors on the defensive side, but that was only to be expected.

"Nowadays you have to be flexible about where you play, I suppose.

"And I played a few games and scored a few goals in the reserves.

"Glenn has had a few words with me and said I have looked a different player after my loan spells."

Omer feels the club can have a good season, and just wants to be a part of that.

"The squad is strong and I don't know why it didn't gel last season," he says.

And he highlights one player as having the determination to win over the critics.

"I think Christian Dailly did a great job last season when he came in and that has carried on," he says.

"He is a good honest lad and I think he will do well at the club; I think it is a bit harsh what the crowd put him through last term."
