James: All Systems Go

David James says it is players, rather than systems, that get results.

One focus of attention is on what system Glenn Roeder will employ on Saturday against Arsenal, especially if the likely return of Fredi Kanoute necessitates a reshuffle.

Another factor is whether Don Hutchison will be once more used on the right to facilitate Joe Cole playing in the middle as he did against Manchester United, with Trevor Sinclair on the left.

Says David, looking for his first home clean sheet against Arsenal this weekend: "I am personally a fan of Ronnie Moran, who used to say all the time that systems are for coaches and players play football - you have to deal with what comes your way and obviously play against them.

"But if people get wound up by 4-4-2s or 3-5-2s or whatever, it detracts from what you are supposed to do, which is basically score goals at the other end and not concede in your own.

"But it has to be said the players here are versatile and we have players equipped to deal with any shape, system, form, or whatever you want to call it that the gaffer decides to use."

Meanwhile David has words of encouragement for fellow keeper Steve Bywater, currently recuperating from a hand injury which will rule him out for several more months.

"He is only a young man," he says. "He'll learn through good experiences and bad, and he has got the physical attributes of a decent keeper.

"Providing his mental state is right, he is prepared to graft a bit, learn from his mistakes and wants to progress, West Ham will have a good keeper on their hands.

"He'll be ready when he's 27!"
