Glenn's Delight

Glenn Roeder is delighted that patience and persistence have paid off in securing the signature of Don Hutchison.

"I'm pleased to say that we have got Don Hutchison on board now because it has been a long old haul," says a delighted Hammers boss.

"Peter Reid did everything he could to keep Don and I think it is very important Sunderland fans know that.

"He was very good to deal with but did everything he could to put me off for the right reasons, because he wants to keep his best players. But in the end we have got our man.

"I was persistent and kept chipping away until Peter decided to sell him to us.

"He had a very successful season with them last year scoring ten goals.

"He has come for football reasons and I get the impression he is very excited about playing with the players we already have at the club.

"There is another Geordie in Michael Carrick in the centre of the midfield but of course he will also have games with John Moncur, a player who was at the club last time Don was here."

Comparisons with Frank Lampard are inevitable, and Glenn adds: "They are both offensive minded players who like to get into the penalty box and score from midfield, which is a priceless asset.

"So you can compare them in that way, and I am hoping that Don can create a perfect balance for Michael Carrick in the midfield.

"The more I look at Michael the more I think he is comfortable just sitting, holding, probing, and just getting forward two or three times a game to make use of that terrific shot that he has got.

"But I don't think he is going to develop into a forward running midfield player, not in the way that Don is."

He has also bought Don for his defensive abilities and adds: "He is not averse to putting his foot in, and he will have his defensive duties to do.

"There will be times when Michael does get forward and Don will have to sit and hold the fort in midfield, which he is more than capable of doing.

"In many respects he has got a little bit of everything because you mustn't forget his ability in the air."

Which Glenn does! "Yes, to England's cost he got that goal at Wembley for Scotland."

But Glenn adds:"I would like to thank Craig Brown and the SFA for allowing us to complete the transfer, and sincerely hope we haven't disrupted their preparations too much.

"Don had a short but successful spell with us before and scores about one goal every three games, so if he can do that over the next three or four years we will be delighted with him.

"Another reason I was attracted to Don is his ability to play as a striker if need be.

"Most of the time last year he played tucked in off the right a little bit the way that Joe is playing for us tucked in off the left.

"But he certainly doesn't want to play as a forward; he is much happier playing in the centre of midfield which is where I have bought him to play.

"But he is such a versatile player that in emergencies he can play as a striker or as a tucked in wide midfield player."

As for suggestions that the fee is high and that there will be no resale value, he adds: "I've only just bought him; I'm not looking to resell him.

"Four years is a long way down the road, and if he performs to his best over the next three or four years it will be money well spent.

"I am of the opinion that the majority of players play their best football from 29 onwards - so I don't see any reason why we are not going to have the best three or four years of Don Hutchison's career.

"I always cite the example of Peter Beardsley and Chris Waddle who I played with at Newcastle.

"They turned in some of their best displays from 30 onwards, and I can see Don doing that as well."

The years have helped him to mature, thinks Glenn, who adds: "Everyone mellows as they get older; the experience of life teaches you certain things, and I'm sure that applies to Don.

"But part of the reason he is the player he is is that he lives on the edge sometimes in terms of the will to win and the determination to win.

"These are the sort of players that our fans respond to and want to see wearing a West Ham shirt.

"It is the sort of players we want - ones who enjoy winning.

"My last signing was David James, a top quality British player, and Don is another current international that I have brought into the club.

"He will be playing for Scotland against Croatia and Belgium and I think the signing shows everyone the type of quality I am trying to bring in to the club."

Glenn, speaking of his frustrations in the transfer market, adds: "It has been a very difficult period in the last eight or ten weeks trying to show the patience that is required to secure the players that you particularly want, and not pushing the panic button and signing players that come into the squad just to fill it.

"We have got an amazingly small squad of senior players and you can get uncomfortable about that when you are not able to make the signings you want.

"But David James and Don Hutchison have come in and hopefully there will be one or two more of that quality coming in shortly, and then we will have to get on with our season and say that is our squad.

"The good thing is that while we have been waiting the boys that are at the club have been playing with tremendous credit in these last two games and their performances have deserved more than one point.

"I have got great encouragement from the team spirit and, at times, the quality that the boys have been showing."

And Glenn says the signing of Don does not mean the end for John Moncur, adding: "John didn't play a lot of football last year; he has a knock at the moment but he is going to be fit for the Derby game.

"Quite honestly I thought he played as well on Saturday as I have seen him play in a West Ham shirt.

"There is still some petrol left in John's tank."

Glenn thinks his luck in the transfer market might now be turning and adds: "I hope so; some you win and some you lose, but it does get a bit nervy at times when you get a few knock backs."

And he admits he is delighted to have beaten Rangers to the signature of the 30 year old: "The fact that a club as big as Glasgow Rangers wanted to buy him and put him into their team is an indication of the quality that we've bought.

"They compete in Europe every year, and obviously they thought he would add something to their team, so it is nice for our club to be able to compete with Rangers and get the man we want."
