The Opposition
After a stuttering start to the 2023/24 campaign, Arsenal have found their groove in recent weeks. Jonas Eidevall’s team are on a run of five straight wins in the WSL, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 in their last league fixture
Eidevall recently signed a new long-term contract, and having joined the Club from Swedish side FC Rosengard, the 40-year-old has amassed 54 wins from his 83 matches in charge of the north London outfit.
In the standings, Arsenal sit in 2nd place, three points behind Chelsea who are on the summit heading into gameweek eight. They have been boosted by the return of Beth Mead, who made her first start since her anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] injury in November 2022.
So far this season, the goals have been shared around Eidevall’s team. Forward Stina Blackstenius leads their scoring charts in the WSL with four goals, whilst Katie McCabe is one goal behind on three. Alessia Russo, Caitlin Foord and Cloé Lacasse all have two, whilst Steph Catley, Victoria Pelova, Frida Maanum and Lina Hurtig have also found the net so far this term.
Russo has played the most league minutes of anyone in Red and White, playing 594 minutes of WSL action, whilst Pelova has three assists to her name heading into Sunday's fixture.
The Gunners were in action on Thursday evening, narrowly beating Southampton in the Continental Tyres League Cup. Molly Pike put the Championship side in front, but Frida Maanum equalised shortly after. The game ticked into second half injury time as Amanda Ilested headed in her first Arsenal goal and the eventual winner.
Kim Little wasn't involved in the win over Southampton on Thursday, however, Vivianne Miedema and Jen Beattie both returned. Leah Williamson, Laura Wienroither and Teyah Goldie are confirmed absentees for Sunday’s fixture.
There have been nine WSL meetings between the two sides, with Arsenal winning eight of those. The two sides last met in February, where the Hammers battled to a 0-0 draw at Chigwell Construction Stadium, their first ever point against their near neighbours.
