Mackenzie Arnold in action against Denmark

Arnold's Australia march on at FIFA Women's World Cup

Mackenzie Arnold kept her third clean sheet of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup as hosts Australia marched on to the quarter-final stage.

The Matildas defeated Denmark, for whom Arnold's Hammers teammate Emma Snerle was a late substitute, 2-0 in their round of 16 tie on Monday.

In front of 75,784 fans in Sydney, Australia did not disappoint their support with a clinical display in front of goal.

Arsenal winger Caitlin Foord got the scoring started on 29 minutes, latching onto a pass from Mary Fowler before finishing from a tight angle.

The Danes pushed for an equaliser at the start of the second half, but Australia made sure of their victory 20 minutes from the end when former Hammer Emily van Egmond teed up Real Madrid's Hayley Raso's driven finish.

Snerle was introduced from the bench for her World Cup bow eight minutes from time, but by then an assured team performance from the hosts had taken the game away from her Denmark side.

Australia now advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for a fourth time, and will be aiming for a first-ever semi-final appearance when they take on either France or Morocco in Brisbane on Saturday.
