Mackenzie Arnold

Arnold selected for home World Cup for Australia

Mackenzie Arnold has been named in Australia's 23-player squad for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup finals.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper has 34 caps for the Matildas and will be heading to her third World Cup with her country, having also featured at both the 2015 and 2019 tournaments in Canada and France respectively.

Australia are joint-hosts of the upcoming competition alongside New Zealand, with the action beginning for the Matildas on Thursday 20 July when they face Republic of Ireland in their opening match of Group B. Arnold could face off against West Ham teammate Izzy Atkinson in that opening fixture, with the young winger named in the Republic of Ireland squad last week

Tony Gustavsson's Australia will also face Canada and Nigeria in the group stages. Prior to that, they will take on France in Melbourne in a warm-up fixture on 14 July before the tournament begins.

Arnold started both of Australia's friendly matches back in April in London, which saw them narrowly lose to Scotland and beat England, bringing an end to the Three Lions' 30-match unbeaten run.

Arnold joins the aforementioned Atkinson, Risa Shimizu, Honoka Hayashi and Emma Snerle as Hammers who are confirmed as heading to the upcoming tournament, with Viviane Asseyi named in France's preliminary squad

The Hammers' No1 played 27 times across the 2022/23 campaign and was a standout performer - reflected by her being voted as the Players' Player of the Season by her teammates.
