Areola: We cannot accept the performance

Alphonse Areola says West Ham United have to use the feeling of disappointment following Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion as motivation to bounce back for the crucial tests ahead.

The Hammers conceded three second half goals to let Brighton saunter into the distance with all three points at the Amex Stadium, as their wait for success against the Seagulls continues.

And Areola admitted that the performance from his side was not acceptable as they failed to lay a glove on an opponent enjoying a successful Premier League campaign.

With a UEFA Europa Conference League trip to AEK Larnaca and a Premier League test against Aston Villa to come next week, the goalkeeper says his team must recover quickly.

“We know that we didn’t play well,” Areola admitted. “Obviously we are not happy about the game and we have to put it behind us and focus on the team.

“We understand that the fans were not happy, we were not happy [with the performance, either]. As I said, we have to be focused on the games that are coming, they are very important for us,

“We stick together, we’re all in the same ship and we move forward and try to get more points.

“As a competitor you cannot accept [Saturday’s game]. We have to work on what didn’t work for us and move forward.”
