Alphonse Areola

Areola named in France’s Euro 2024 squad

West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has been included in France’s 25-man squad for UEFA Euro 2024 this summer.

The 31-year-old has been in imperious form for the Hammers throughout the 2023/24 campaign, featuring 32 times in all competitions and earning the Club’s Save of the Season award for a fingertip stop that denied Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard in February.

A regular within the France set-up since first being called up to the senior ranks in October 2015 and then making his debut in September 2018, Areola currently has five caps to his name and was on the bench for friendlies against Germany and Chile in March.

Euro 2024 is set to be the Paris native’s third major tournament on the international scene, after he helped Les Bleus claim the 2018 FIFA World Cup crown and then finish as beaten finalists in the same competition four years later.

France begin their Euros campaign in Group D against Austria at 8pm BST on Monday 17 June, before taking on the Netherlands at 8pm BST on Friday 21 June and then Poland at 5pm BST on Tuesday 25 June.

Before the tournament, Didier Deschamps’ men will play friendlies against Luxembourg and Canada, on Wednesday 5 June (8pm BST) and Sunday 9 June (8.15pm BST) respectively.

Areola becomes the second Hammer to be called-up for a summer tournament, following Lucas Paquetá's inclusion in the Brazil squad for the 2024 Copa América.
