Alphonse Areola celebrates at Anderlecht

Areola: It's up to us to keep the momentum

Alphonse Areola says West Ham United's confidence is growing as they get into the meat of the 2022/23 season.

The Hammers made it two wins from two following the international break by securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Anderlecht on Thursday.

With that success coming hot on the heels of a 2-0 Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Areola believes his team is well set to kick-on in the hectic period ahead of the World Cup.

Next up is the visit of one of Areola's former clubs, Fulham, to London Stadium on Sunday and the No13 cannot wait for the contest.

"We're on a pretty positive run at the moment, so it's up to us to keep the momentum, and go and win now on Sunday against Fulham," the France international goalkeeper said.

"It was a fairly close game on Thursday, with not many opportunities, but as you said; the substitutions made the difference. They came in very well, we were already settled into the game and they gave us that little bit extra."

Thursday's win owed plenty to Areola's magnificent reaction save to keep out a Fabio Silva header late on, after Gianluca Scamacca's smart finish has broken the deadlock eleven minutes from time.

The 29-year-old was thrilled to play his part as his team secured a third straight win to maintain their 100 per cent record in UEFA Europa Conference League Group B.

"The save came at was a moment where we were suffering a bit more. We started to fall back. The end of the game…It’s intense…I saw the cross come in, I adjusted my position quickly and I was ready to intervene; Thankfully for us, it made the difference and saw us win.

"We knew they were a good team, so we had to be ready; we had to be ready to play a decent team, good with the ball. We knew how to keep the ball, we knew how to control it throughout the game."
