Angelo Ogbonna claps the West Ham United fans

Angelo Ogbonna signs new contract

West Ham United is delighted to confirm that Angelo Ogbonna has signed a new one-year contract with the Club.

The popular Italian defender – the second-longest serving player at the Club behind Aaron Cresswell – has put pen to paper on a 12-month extension after his previous deal expired at the end of June.

Ogbonna, who made his 232nd appearance for the Club as a late substitute in the UEFA Europa Conference League final victory over ACF Fiorentina in Prague in June, is looking forward to entering his ninth season in a Claret and Blue shirt.

Speaking to whufc.com, he said: “It feels really good to remain with West Ham. I’m really pleased with what we’ve achieved, and I’m pleased with what we did last season. I want to thank the Club and, as I always say, I’m here to help. Now I’m here to stay as well and I really want to keep going and pushing on now.

“Everyone welcomed me in the best way when I joined West Ham in 2015 and made me feel like a part of the family here. That was the most important thing and that’s why I’m so pleased to stay here. I want to keep giving back.

“I can never really put into words what West Ham means to me. This is the Club where I grew up and became a man. This is the Club where I’ve seen my children growing up. This is the Club which saw me leave my home country for the first time and experience living away from Italy, being here with my wife, and everyone welcomed us to east London with open arms. That is why, whenever I talk about this Club, I feel so emotional.”

Manager David Moyes added: “I am pleased that Angelo has agreed a new contract with the Club. He is an important player for us, both on and off the pitch, and his experience and character has been extremely valuable for us during my time here. Angelo did really well to fight back from a serious injury at his age, and we look forward to working with him again next season.”

The centre-back, who signed for the Club in summer 2015 from Italian giants Juventus, became an instant fan favourite in his first year, making 39 appearances as the Hammers secured a top-seven finish in the final season at the Boleyn Ground.

He also provided one of the most memorable moments of the Farewell Boleyn campaign, nodding home his first Hammers goal – an FA Cup fourth round replay winner late in extra-time against Liverpool.

Having quickly established himself, Ogbonna went on to become a reliable and consistent performer as the Irons settled into their new home at London Stadium. In 2020 he was named runner-up in the Hammer of the Year award, and later that year earned a recall to the Italy national squad.

In November 2021, Ogbonna suffered a serious knee injury during a Premier League fixture against Liverpool, which kept him out for the remainder of the campaign, but he fought his way back to first team action, making his return in August 2022 in the opening game of our victorious UECL campaign – a qualifying play-off win over Danish side Viborg FF.

He went on to feature eight times in the Club's glorious run to Prague, and 30 times in total as West Ham won their first major silverware in 43 years and secured European football for a third season in succession.

Everyone at West Ham United is delighted that Angelo will remain with the Club and wishes him the very best for the season ahead.
