Álvarez named in Mexico squad for November CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final matches

Edson Álvarez has been named in the Mexico squad for their two important CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final matches against Honduras in November.

El Tri were beaten finalists in last year’s series after being edged out 2-1 by the USA in March and now resume their campaign, following an unbeaten run of friendlies throughout the last two international breaks in September and October.

First, Álvarez’s team will travel to Estadio General Francisco Morazán for the first leg in San Pedro Sula on Friday 15 November 8pm local time (2am GMT on Saturday 16 November), and then they will contest the return leg in the city of Toluca at Estadio Nemesio Díez, with the tie kicking-off at 8.30pm local time on Tuesday 19 November (2.30am GMT on Wednesday 20 November).

The West Ham United midfielder has won 81 caps and scored five goals for his national team so far, and will hope to captain the two-time competition runners-up to the semi-finals under the tutelage of Javier Aguirre.

Elsewhere, Callum Marshall has been named in Northern Ireland’s squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League Group C3 ties against Belarus and Luxembourg, to be played on Friday 15 November (7.45pm GMT) and Monday 18 November (7.45pm GMT) respectively.

The 19-year-old, who is currently enjoying a season-long loan with Huddersfield Town, helped his country to a thumping 5-0 win over Bulgaria in October at Windsor Park.

With two games remaining, Michael O’Neill’s side hold their promotion destiny in their own hands, sitting top of the group with seven points from their four matches to date, knowing that two wins here will secure first place.
