Edson Álvarez has been included in Mexico’s squad for two matches to be played during the October international break.
Mexico will take on Spanish La Liga club side Valencia in a special friendly match to be played at the Cuauhtémoc Stadium in Puebla on Saturday 12 October at a kick-off time to be confirmed.
The game will see Mexico’s most-capped men’s senior international Andrés Guardado, who played for Valencia between 2012-15, make a farewell appearance for his national team.
The 38-year-old midfielder, who retired from international football in 2022, but who lined up alongside Guido Rodríguez at Betis last season and continues to play for Mexican club León, won 179 caps in an international career spanning 18 years, five FIFA World Cups and three CONCACAF Gold Cup wins.
Álvarez and Guardado lined up alongside one another 24 times for Mexico, including four at the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 Gold Cup final victory over the United States.
Speaking of the United States, Mexico will also take on their neighbours in a friendly international to be played at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, on Tuesday 15 October at 8.30pm local time (3.30am BST on Wednesday 16 October).
West Ham United midfielder Álvarez has won 80 caps and scored five goals for his country since debuting in February 2017 in a friendly against Iceland.
The 26-year-old has appeared at two FIFA World Cup finals, won two Gold Cups and appeared at the 2024 Copa América.
