West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez completed the full 90 minutes of the CONCACAF Nations League final in the early hours of Monday morning, with Mexico finishing as runners-up to hosts the USA following a 2-0 defeat in Arlington, Texas.
Having scored to help his country book a spot in the showpiece, with the opening goal in Thursday night’s 3-0 semi-final victory over Panama, Álvarez once again started in midfield for Jaime Lozano’s men, who were looking to secure their first ever Nations League crown.
But AFC Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams put the USA ahead with a 30-yard rocket on the stroke of half-time, before Giovanni Reyna - who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Borussia Dortmund - put the result beyond doubt shortly after the hour mark.
The game was somewhat marred by discriminatory chanting from fans, with play having to be paused three times by referee Drew Fischer.
The US have now won all three CONCACAF Nations League titles since its inception in 2019/20, while Mexico have ended as beaten finalists on two occasions.
