Aguerd: Hard work on set pieces is paying off

It is fast becoming routine for West Ham United – a James Ward-Prowse corner leading to a goal.

For the second time this season Nayef Aguerd was the beneficiary of a delivery from the No7 on Thursday night, scoring the winner in the Irons’ 2-1 victory at SC Freiburg.

Kurt Zouma and Tomáš Souček have also found the net on the end of a Ward-Prowse corner this term, with the summer signing now having tallied up an incredible six assists already.

With the service on point, Aguerd is only too happy to throw himself at the ball as he goes in search of goals, and he was thrilled to play a decisive part in Germany.

“It was a nice feeling,” he explained. “We all know that we are performing from set pieces – Prowsey’s delivery is wonderful so we work a lot in training to score these goals.

“On Thursday it was me, it was Kurt against Luton. Tomáš has scored from set pieces, so we work on those.

“We are very happy to achieve these three points in this atmosphere, it’s a good win.”

Thursday’s success came as a result of both sides of the Hammers’ game. After an expansive first half, in which the front three of Lucas Paquetá, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus all shone, it was time to show resilience in the second half when Freiburg cancelled out Paquetá’s opener.

The visitors did just that and Aguerd was full of praise for the performance.

“The forward players were unbelievable,” he continued. “It wasn’t only the three who started, also on the bench we had Saïd, [Danny, Divin]. Mick was injured and didn’t play so we have a very good team with a lot of quality.

“We’ll keep working and hopefully it will stay the same.

“Now we return to the Premier League. Newcastle are very tough to play, like all the teams in the league.

“But we will be playing at home, in front of our fans, so I hope it will be a great afternoon. We will give everything to make them happy.”
