West Ham United at Bournemouth

2023/24 Fixtures: Eight dates for your diary

Saturday 12 August – AFC Bournemouth (A)

West Ham United open the campaign with a summer Saturday trip to the Dorset coast to take on AFC Bournemouth.

It is a match-up that will spark good memories for the Irons, who claimed six vital Premier League points against the Cherries last term.

After Kurt Zouma and Saïd Benrahma scored the goals to defeat Gary O'Neil's side at home in October, the Hammers ran riot at the Vitality Stadium in late April.

Michail Antonio opened the scoring with a close-range header with just five minutes played, before Paquetá repeated the trick a mere seven minutes later.

Declan Rice all but made the game safe two minutes before the break, while Pablo Fornals applied the coup de grâce with a spectacular scorpion kick effort on 72 minutes.

A similar outcome this time around would be the perfect start to the new campaign.

Saturday 19 August - Chelsea (H)

Our first home match of the new campaign is a mouthwatering one - a London derby against Chelsea.

We've enjoyed some memorable meetings with the Blues in recent times, and who could forget the dramatic 3-2 win which sparked our run to survival in the COVID-disrupted 2019/20 season?

Last season's London Stadium game wasn't bad, either. After the Hammers were subjected to a whirlwind Chelsea start, in which João Félix opened the scoring, we came back strongly.

Former Blues defender Emerson popped up on the left hand side to notch a leveller before the break, and 1-1 was how it ended.

We can expect a similarly full-blooded clash in east London in mid-August.

Saturday 2 September - Luton Town (A)

Our first meeting with one of the newly-promoted sides comes on 2 September, when we make the short journey up the M1 to face Luton Town.

The Hatters returned to the top flight after 31 years away by winning the Championship Play-off final on penalties against Coventry City in May.

West Ham last played Luton in a March 1994 FA Cup quarter-final tie, which the Bedfordshire side won 3-2 after a replay, so a belated shot at revenge awaits.

The Hatters also have three former Hammers in their ranks, with Academy graduates Dan Potts, Reece Burke and Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu all playing their part in the club's rise up the leagues.

Tuesday 5 December - Tottenham Hotspur (A)

Our first derby against Tottenham falls on a midweek in early December, with the Hammers set to head to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under the lights.

We were, of course, the first team to win at Spurs' new home in April 2019, when Michail Antonio memorably scored the only goal of the game to settle a tight contest.

The game there in October 2020 will never be forgotten by Hammers, either. We found ourselves 3-0 down with 16 minutes played - and it remained 3-0 until the 83rd minute.

No chance for the visitors, then? Not a bit of it, as Fabián Balbuena pulled one back, Davinson Sánchez scored an own goal, and then - in the fourth minute of four added - Manuel Lanzini lashed a 20-yard rocket into the top corner.

Tuesday 26 December - Arsenal (A)

Everyone loves a spot of festive football, and for the second year in succession, we'll head to London rivals Arsenal on Boxing Day.

Sandwiched between home matches against Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion, we'll take on the 2022/23 runners-up looking for a Christmas treat.

To do so we will have to overturn our recent form at Emirates Stadium. Our last win in N7 came on the opening day of the 2015/16 campaign, when Cheikhou Kouyaté and Mauro Zarate found the net to claim a 2-0 victory for Sleven Bilić's men.

We've had more success at home, and last season's clash was one to remember as we battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 thanks to strikes by Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen.

Saturday 13 or 20 January - Sheffield United (A)

2024 will begin with an Emirates FA Cup third round tie - but our first Premier League game of the New Year will follow at Sheffield United.

The precise date of this fixture is yet to be determined, with this round of league fixtures taking place across two weekends to facilitate a mid-season break.

Our meetings with the Blades always possess a touch of added spice, of course, and we'll be looking for a second straight win at Bramall Lane, after Sébastien Haller's thunderbolt secured a 1-0 success in November 2020.

The Blades won promotion back to the top-flight last season, finishing as runners-up to Vincent Kompany's Burnley.

Saturday 16 March - Aston Villa (H)

We'll be protecting one of our best recent records against a fellow Premier League club on 16 March when Aston Villa come to town.

You have to go all the way back to May 2015 for our last defeat against the Villans, with the Hammers having won six and drawn four of the ten meetings since.

We earned four points against the West Midlanders last term, as Pablo Fornals' solitary goal secured our first win of the campaign at Villa Park in late August 2022, before we drew the return 1-1 in March.

Unai Emery's men will also be looking to emulate our UEFA Europa Conference League success in the new campaign, having booked their ticket to Europe for the first time in 13 seasons with a seventh-place finish this term.

Sunday 19 May - Manchester City (A)

The 2023/24 campaign will come to a close in mid-May with a trip to defending champions Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's men of course landed the treble, also winning the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in June to complete an historic season.

A third straight league title - and fourth in five years - was reward for a relentless pursuit of Arsenal, which saw them overhaul the Gunners in the final weeks of the campaign to clinch the top prize by a margin of five points.

Few would bet against them being in a position to add another trophy to their cabinet by the time this game comes around, but West Ham will be hoping to put a spanner in the works.

David Moyes will also hope his team have one more assignment following this match, with the UEFA Europa League final scheduled for Wednesday 22 May in Dublin.
