Lucas Paquetá in action for Brazil against Uruguay

Paquetá's Brazil suffer Uruguay defeat in Copa América

Brazil's hopes of landing a tenth Copa América title were ended at the quarter-final stage by Uruguay on Saturday evening.

Lucas Paquetá's side were unable to find a way past their neighbours in Las Vegas, despite enjoying 60 per cent possession and Uruguay having to play the final 16 minutes of normal time with ten men after Nahitan Nández was sent-off.

Paquetá himself made way after 81 minutes, with Douglas Luiz coming on in his place, but with neither team able to find the breakthrough, the contest went straight to penalties.

It was Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay who prevailed from the spot, as Douglas Luiz and Éder Militão both failed with their penalties to see La Celeste triumph 4-2.

Paquetá's tournament ends with him having reached a half-century of caps for his country. Uruguay will go on to face Colombia in Wednesday's second semi-final in Charlotte, North Carolina.
