Alan Pardew has revealed his delight at signing Argentine international Lionel Scaloni on loan just moments before the close of the January transfer window.
The 27-year-old right-back completed a temporary move from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna until the end of the season, and Pards reveals that he possesses similarities to the player he has been brought in to replace.
"I targeted Lionel because, in my view, he is very similar to Tomas Repka," said the Hammers boss. "He is strong and aggressive and I am sure our fans will enjoy seeing him play.
"It was important to me that we retain the equilibrium of the team, and that is why I have signed a player of Lionel's style.
"He has a fantastic pedigree, with more than 50 Champions League appearances to his name, and has been a top player for Deportivo in recent seasons.
"Initially, I didn't want to take anybody on loan, but when the opportunity arose to sign a player of this quality, I simply couldn't turn it down.
"Hopefully, it will be a success for us, and a success for him, and it is something that may turn into a long-term deal if all goes well."
