Members of the West Ham United squad discuss their main hobbies away from the football pitch. Italian full-back Emerson Palmieri reflects on how playing video games with friends is a fun way to unwind while balancing life as a footballer and father of three...
How did you get into playing video games?
I started playing a while ago, back during COVID. Call of Duty: Warzone was really popular at the time, and me and the Brazilian boys at Chelsea - David Luiz, Willian, and sometimes Jorginho [who was born in Brazil but plays for Italy, like me] - got into it. It was a great way to stay connected during lockdown.
What do you like about gaming?
I think my favourite part about it is the social aspect. It’s something you can play with your friends. Warzone is a challenging game, so it’s very rewarding the few times you win as a team with your friends. It’s a nice way to unwind and take my mind off football for a bit. Football is my life, but it’s healthy to disconnect now and then.
How much time do you spend on gaming outside of football?
I like to play at least a couple of times a week. My priority is always work at West Ham and spending time with my family when I’m home. But I think it’s important to have some time for yourself too. At about eight or nine o’clock, after tucking the kids in bed, I have a few games. Although I try to be as quiet as possible on the voice chat, I usually get a few messages from my wife telling me to keep my voice down!
Do you play games on your own or with others?
I mostly play with Lucas Paquetá. During the week in the evenings, he’ll send me a message, or I’ll reach out to him. We both have young families, so finding time can be tricky, but when we do, it’s always a lot of fun. We’re laughing and chatting the whole time. Warzone is our go-to game. Luis Guilherme has a console too, but he’s only interested in FIFA!
How good are you at it?
I’d say I’m decent, but Lucas is on another level. He’s the star player - I just back him up! When we play together, he’s usually the one carrying the team. He often plays with Brazilian streamers.
Can you share some tips on how to get involved?
Warzone is definitely challenging, especially at the start. The learning curve is steep, and there’s a lot to take in. But it’s very rewarding once you get the hang of it. Patience is key!
